I haven’t checked out Pimsleur, but I ’acquired’ the Michel Thomas method early on in my studies. To be honest I found it really helpful in the beginning, but only up to a point.

When I started learning to read and write Japanese, I was immediately coming across things I had already learnt vocally in Michel Thomas so I learnt the reading/writing of it much quicker as a result.

I guess if it’s combined with reading and writing, it’s a valid resource. Especially if (like me) you’re not taking actual classes, and have less practice speaking and listening.

As far as I understood it, general entry is just a normal ticket for the day. You can also get just afternoon ones for cheaper… but I went for general all day Saturday.

It’s extra for the sushi and sake awards, which means you get to taste the entries into both competitions (and possibly vote for the winner, not sure) but it’s not the only food choice there. The website has a page about a food court and restaurants, so I’m pretty sure there will be loads to choose from.

JapanesePod101 is great, really good stuff there.
I’m not sure whether this is worth it seeing as you already did Pimsleur, but Michel Thomas method was also pretty good.

Yeah, definitely learn them all. The combos are easy once you know all your main kana, as you learn very quickly how to blend the two sounds.

I struggled a bit with dakuten, but they finally stuck in my memory after I devised a stupid mind trick to remember them by. It’d sound utterly weird to anyone else but my mind works in mysterious ways.

Didn’t need to do it with handakuten though, remembered that pretty easily because it was only one set.

If you put the time in early on to learn all the hiragana well, you’ll appreciate it so much later on.

@isocracy – I think you can still get advance tickets, least you could last time I looked. You just print them out, so it won’t matter that it’s not far off.

Once I work out what time I’m going and stuff (what day(s) are you guys there?) I’ll let people know. I’ll be with the boyfriend so will also depend what he wants to do, but could maybe arrange to meet people!

I’m well up for the food. I too have never found decent ramen, and I’m in the middle of London!

You going to the Japan Festival in Brighton later in the year I take it? I missed it last year, gutted :(

Wow that first ryokan looks amazing! Exactly the sort of place I want to stay in when I eventually visit!

Haha, as much as what Cassandra says is true… I’m a sucker for this sort of thing!

I bought myself a really lovely notebook to put my revision notes and writing practice in… seriously, my notebook is so cute, it makes me want to carry it everywhere and use it all the time. Which is exactly why I got it for my Japanese… I know what I’m like haha!

So apart from that… I’d say download Anki and get to grips with how it works because you’ll be using it a lot. I still haven’t managed to make mine sync up with my phone, when I know I’d really benefit from being able to use it while I’m at work.

こんにちは Nick! I’m also from London… it’s nice to see some more UK people here :D Good luck with your Japanese!

@Yggbert – Oooh! Good luck with your Japanese maybe-soon-to-be-girlfriend! :D Where abouts will you be heading in from? If you need any travel advice lemme know. Also, agreed about romaji. Although maybe that’s just me feeling a bit superior over anyone who chooses to ignore kana and not learn Japanese properly.

@Mister – it’s not expensive at all… I got my saturday ticket for 6 quid. And it’s not sold out as far as I know. But maybe not worth a journey all the way from Scotland hehe.

Hah… yeah, I’m not exactly looking forward to all the girls running around looking like Hello Kitty threw up on them, screaming ‘KAWAAAAIIIII DESUUUUU!!!’ at anything and everything… but I am looking forward to the rest of it. Hoping to buy some cool stuff, learn a bit about the culture, taste some nice food and generally have a laugh. Hell, I may even buy something generically かわいい and ridiculous but dammit, I shall have fun doing it :P

ooh, awesome! I got tickets so long ago that I’m scared I’m going to forget what day it is on…. so excited though! Not been before… only ever been to really small conventions, so kinda intrigued to see some cosplay that’s actually good, and eat some good sushi!

I’ve joined… figured I might as well. I’m currently on a bit of a diet kick, using a calorie counting site. However the fitness tracker is a bit rubbish on there, so this looks a lot better. I’m about to start going to Zumba classes next week, so seems like a good time to join up with this too!

I wish I could draw… loving this idea. I work well with that sort of memorisation.

I love anime, but it’s not the main reason I’m here. It did make me realise I wanted to learn, when I started to pick up odd phrases here and there without really trying.. I thought it would be cool to understand more than just the odd word.

However, it goes a lot deeper than that… in that I’m fascinated with everything Japan has to offer. I want to visit and not feel so lost… I want to meet people and converse with them… buy some food without sounding like an ignorant tourist who expects the whole world to speak my language. The whole country stirs up some sort of emotion in me, which I’ve not had before with any other places I’ve wanted to visit/languages I’ve wanted to learn. That’s my driving force that keeps me going I guess.

And yes, I’d like to watch Bleach without the subs on… sue me :P

@Mister – Yeah, we’ve abandoned the Daphne and Celeste thing, due to being mentally plagued by the songs every time we mentioned those names. Have fond memories of those two getting bottles thrown at them at Reading Festival though…

We have the kitties now :D Still a little undecided on names… waiting until they come out of their shell a bit to see what they are like. The black one may well end up being called Luna, but the other one is still going by the name Carrie for now. Will go through this list again later and hopefully rename her!
