I finally bought 3 books mentioned in this thread, Breaking into Japanese Literature, Exploring Japanese literature, and Read Real Japanese. I’m starting with Exploring Japanese literature but jkl is right it’s very hard.

It’s nice, though, to see everything put together naturally. You can learn all the grammar and vocab you want but putting them together to form a natural sounding sentence is difficult and example sentences can only get you so far, so seeing -real- sentences is extremely helpful.

    I don’t understand this:

    こんな夢を見た

I definitely know the 夢を見た part “I saw a dream”, or at least I hope I do — But what’s the こんな part. I have a feeling it’s one of those abstract words that can’t really be translated well since jisho.org says “such” and “like this” which both don’t seem to fit.

Did the racoons speak or respond to Japanese?

No, on a more serious note, there is a person on Lang-8 who really want to practice English with somebody on skype – I think you have to PM him on lang-8 (username: KEN0405) since he didn’t specify his skype id in the post he wrote here: http://lang-8.com/166823/journals/1356813/Skype%253F

Also, as far as making deep friendships, lang-8 is a weak choice because it’s solely designed for getting corrections and maybe very mild communication about cultural questions and such.

I wish it could be a little easier though to speak with someone in the language your learning, I have to agree with Gigatron in that it becomes very lonely! I finally just started speaking to some of my relatives even though they don’t know a word of Japanese in order to get better at forming sentences although 1-sided conversations are starting to get boring — はっと ().

@MisterM2402 – That was one of the first words I learned so I don’t either, I just thought it also sounded really funny, sun book language, but I think yours stills wins, The fly-go-machine >_<.

I never thought of it like that before, fly-go-machine 飛行機, lol. Now I’m probably going learn new words a lot easier just because they sound so funny when read literally like that.

What about 日本語? Everyone’s heard of the Sun book language right?

From my experience with trying to find a person from Japan in America (that’s not touring) is none. I’m sure there are plenty of Japanese people living in America either for work or education, I just haven’t found any. I actually went to several Japanese restaurants and nobody, not even the owner, was Japanese or hardly knew a few words of Japanese.

I think your best bet is lang-8.com, if you haven’t heard of it it’s kind of like an electronic pen-pal where you make a post in Japanese and you get corrected by Japanese speakers. It’s a great way to meet a lot of people born and raised in Japan who are interested in learning English. Unfortunately your only friends within the context of helping each other with languages, culture, etc… not really the best place for any other stuff.

Unfortunately, If you want a real Japanese friend then you have to move to Japan.

By the way, you mentioned several times you like anime, which anime do you like?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble accessing the Textfugu website lately. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Basically when it doesn’t I get an error page that says an invalid .htaccess file but other times I access the site just fine. Also when I try to access the website and get that error message sometimes other servers will work just fine, for example, If my desktop displays the error message my cellphone may show the site just fine or vice versa. Then again, I had moments where every computer and ISP provider I could try came up with the error message.

For me it’s not a big deal since I’m waiting for the next lesson to appear but I just thought I should mention it and see if I’m alone here.

I’m studying how to form more complicated sentences by taking advantage of and combining many grammar types, word-choice, and a wider assortment of particles to try and sound a lot more fluent.

Unfortunately my sentences starts to fall apart the bigger it get’s :( but that’s changing with the help I’m getting from lang-8. I’m also trying to get a lot better with honorific/humble language but apparently I completely butcher every attempt, my corrections I get are dripping in red-ink.

    My latest sentence is:

    YouTubeで、ファンを作るボーカロイドの音楽ビデオを捜していたときに「はと」ビデオをみつかります。
I was searching Youtube for Fan-Made Vocaloid Music Videos when I discovered the “Hato” video.

Thankfully, I only made a few mistakes:
    YouTubeで、ファンが作ったボーカロイドの音楽ビデオを捜していたときに「はと」のビデオをみつけました。

I wasn’t so lucky as to get the correctors with good English, however I did get the ones with very good Japanese (as noted by other correctors). So far the people who stop by and correct my entries aren’t that good at English. Also for your other mention about writing the sentences in English, I already do that. I’m really just stumped, I could go on and say I’ll learn this later when I get more advanced (and can have a grammatical discussion in Japanese with the correctors) or do some more digging and possibly further confuse me.

I’m so confused now, a second topic particle is a contrasting particle to a topic not necessarily described by the first particle. How do you know “Here” isn’t being used with “Today” – is it context?

    Thanks in advance ;)

During my very first post on lang-8, it was the first question I asked, here’s her response to the question from a lot further back along with the link

    Sentence in question: 今日の天気は外はとても暑いですのに家の中は涼しいです。

Her response to why there are 2 “は” in this sentence and clause – “今日の天気は外はとても暑いです”
    「今日の天気は」で一度区切るため2回使っても良いです。
    「今日の天気は」「外はとても暑いのに家の中は涼しいです」
    Erikaさんの添削のように「、」を付ければ分かりやすかったかな。。。

I occasionally do that but the reason I do it occasionally is very often, if not always, they explain the clarification very well but in Japanese. Most of them can’t speak English very well and I only know enough words to pass the JLPT 5 test so I can’t understand the clarification — it’s one of the pitfalls on lang-8

Lang-8 is where you practice writing your Japanese and get corrected by native speakers of that language. here’s the link to the post I’m talking about – lang-8.com/snow/journals/1217893

I’m referring to having two は particles in one clause. The example you gave “夏は暑いですが、冬は寒いです” is one sentence but 2 separate clauses.

What I was referring to is:
今はここは冬なので、今日はとても寒いです。 where the “今はここは冬” is a single clause having two particles. Is it possible that these 2 are contrasting and if so, how so?

No that helped a lot and got me on the right path, like everything else, experience will help me get better at it but I have a better idea what to look for now. Thanks
